The Human Growth Hormone (HGH) is a naturally occurring hormone principally produced in the pituitary gland. HGH plays vital roles in bodily functions ranging from growth and development to metabolism. One of its lesser-known functions is its involvement in cognitive function, as HGH is believed to shield the brain from damage and promote the growth of new brain cells. HGH deficiency can yield numerous cognitive obstacles, such as memory and concentration problems, difficulty in learning new things, slowed thinking, and impaired decision-making.
Though the exact process by which HGH deficiency leads to cognitive impairment is not clearly understood, hypotheses posit that HGH may protect the brain from damage by fostering the growth of new brain cells and reducing inflammation. Adult Onset Human Growth Hormones (HGH) deficiency is commonly diagnosed in adults with a history of childhood growth hormone deficiency. However, it can also occur in adults without a prior growth hormone deficiency.
Causes of Adult Onset HGH Deficiency
Several factors can contribute to adult-onset HGH deficiency. This includes pituitary gland tumors, head injuries, certain medications, and autoimmune diseases. While the exact cause of pituitary gland tumors is unknown, it is worth noting that risk factors may encompass age (tumors are more common in adults), gender (women are at higher risk than men), a family history of the condition, certain pre-existing medical conditions like multiple endocrine neoplasia type 1 (MEN1), and exposure to specific chemicals or radiation. However, even if the tumors occur, HGH supplementation can eliminate the deficiency and its undesirable symptoms in a significant number of cases.
Medications Contributing to HGH Deficiency
Certain medications may cause HGH deficiency through different mechanisms. These include medications that damage the pituitary gland such as radiation therapy and chemotherapy; medications that block the release of HGH like steroids; and medications that increase HGH metabolism like alcohol. The risk of developing HGH deficiency varies depending on the medication, its dosage and the length of treatment. However, not everyone taking these medications will develop HGH deficiency.
Autoimmune Diseases and HGH Deficiency
Autoimmune diseases, where the body's immune system attacks its own tissues, can also lead to HGH deficiency. In such cases, the immune system may attack the cells in the pituitary gland that produce HGH. This can result in a decrease in HGH production leading to symptoms such as growth retardation in children, short stature in adults, fatigue, muscle weakness, low sex drive, depression, thinning skin, and increased risk of fractures. Some of the autoimmune diseases that can cause HGH deficiency include Amyloidosis, Graves' disease, Hashimoto's thyroiditis, Lupus erythematosus, Multiple sclerosis, and Sjgren's syndrome. Not all people with autoimmune diseases will develop an HGH deficiency with risk varying depending on the disease's severity and treatment.
HGH Replacement Therapy as a Potential Solution
If you experience any of the cognitive impairments discussed, consider consulting a board-certified physician for an evaluation. HGH replacement therapy may be an effective treatment for your adult-onset HGH deficiency. A physician can administer tests to determine HGH levels, and if HGH deficiency is diagnosed, they can discuss potential treatment options.
